Bubbles for Your Troubles: Supporting Emerging Museum Professionals Through Care‑Centered Practice
Developed by Ashley Witherspoon, MSW, LCSW in collaboration with NEMPN
Emerging museum professionals enter the field with passion, creativity, and a deep commitment to community. Yet the early stages of a museum career often come with stressors that aren’t always visible: job‑market uncertainty, competitive hiring processes, emotionally charged visitor interactions, and the pressure to “prove yourself” in institutions that carry both history and hierarchy.
Through Bubbles for Your Troubles, my partnership with NEMPN, my goal is to create a space where emerging professionals feel supported, grounded, and emotionally equipped to thrive in their roles.
Museums are more than buildings; they are emotional landscapes. Staff members navigate visitor expectations, sensitive content, community needs, and the weight of cultural stewardship. For early‑career professionals, this can feel overwhelming, especially when paired with job‑market stress or the uncertainty of transitioning into a new role.
This year, I created the Trauma‑Informed Visitor Interaction Starter Pack, a practical resource designed to help museum professionals approach visitor engagement with care, awareness, and confidence. The Starter Pack includes foundational trauma‑informed principles, communication strategies, and reflective prompts to support both staff wellbeing and visitor experience.
In the coming months, I’ll be sharing practical wellness strategies, reflective exercises, job‑market stress tools, and trauma‑informed insights tailored specifically for emerging museum professionals. My hope is that each installment feels like a moment to pause, breathe, and reconnect with yourself.
I’m grateful to NEMPN for creating space for this work and honored to walk alongside emerging museum professionals as they navigate this meaningful, complex, and deeply human field.
